Waitlists, explained: why sold out usually is not

Almost every full sailing on the Xiamen to Kinmen route keeps a waitlist open. What that means, and what to do when the boat you wanted says zero seats.

Sold out on this crossing rarely means the day is over. Across the sailings we sample, roughly one in seven shows zero seats free, and nearly all of those still have a waitlist open. The ferry company keeps the list because seats come back: unpaid holds lapse, groups shrink, plans change.

Why a waitlist place is usually worth taking

A lot of people book this crossing a long way out, weeks ahead of the date, and plenty of them change their minds. Those cancellations come back into the pool in the last few days before the sailing, which is exactly when the waitlist gets worked through. So a boat showing zero seats today often has seats again by the time it leaves, and the people who put their names down are the ones who get them.

A sailing also stops selling online an hour before it leaves, and your seat is only held until 35 minutes before departure. A boat that looks full at lunchtime can therefore have seats again in the afternoon, when unpaid holds are released back into the pool.

What to do instead of waiting

  • Look at the next sailing. Wutong runs twelve crossings a day, so the next boat is usually about an hour behind the one you wanted.
  • Look at Quanzhou. The Shihu route often has seats on days when Wutong does not, and it lands at the same pier on Kinmen.
  • Look at the day either side. The strip on the home page shows how many sailings are bookable on each of the next two weeks, so a day with room is easy to spot.

Joining the list

You cannot join the waitlist here yet. The Join waitlist button opens a message to us with the sailing, the date and the cabin already written in, and we put you on the list by hand. You pay the fare when you join the list, because that is what holds your place in the queue, and if no ticket is issued for you the payment is refunded.
